Playground Installations – Update August 27

Frankfort Park District Playground Installation Update – 8/27/21

Brookmeadow Park

The Brookmeadow Park project has been stalled for several weeks because the swing bay was that arrived with the equipment was not to our satisfaction and a new swing bag was ordered. With material shortages, this week the supplier updated the ship date for the new swing bay to November. This is not acceptable. If the playground was getting a mulch play surface, the swings could be added at a later date. Since the project was specified to have rubber surfacing, it needs to be installed prior to opening the playground. When update was provided, staff and the contractor made a decision to reuse the swing bay from the old playground. The swings were in good condition and I am sorry that this was not done earlier. This week, the swing bay, has been sent to be painted and is estimated to be done Friday, September 3rd. Once the swing bay is installed and the footings cure, the rubber surfacing can be installed. The play surfacing will take 3-5 days to install and then needs 5 days to cure.

The site furnishings were ordered in April. This includes the park benches, trash cans and tables, thus far they have not arrived. The original ship date was the first week in June. They are a coming from a different supplier and the updated estimated ship date is September 15 with delivery 40 days later. The pandemic has affected the suppliers ability to acquire materials. These items are outside of the poured surface so they can be mounted later and will not affect the playground work.

Sandalwood Park

Crews are 50% done with the installation of the Sandalwood playground structure. Barring any weather delays the structure will be completed end of next week, Friday, September 3. Following the installation of the playground, the gravel subsurface that goes below the poured rubber surface will go down, this estimated to take a week.  The contractor has notified the subcontractor and the plan is to start the rubber install @ September 13. Installation will take 3-5 days and 5 days to cure. The hope is to have the play structure done by the end of September.

If the project moves forward on the updated schedule, it is estimated that both playgrounds will be completed at the end of September and site furnishings installed before the winter months. This is not how the Park District anticipated the installation of the projects. Thank you for your patience. Further updates will be provided as they are available.
