Travel Programs

Barrington, IL

We will start the three hour, docent-guided tour at the private residence - The Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington.  Inside, the Sanfilippo Collection has on display the largest variety of restored instruments in the world. Each one of these devices is, in one sense, a form of time-machine. When you listen to a musical selection played on one of the automatic marvels you are hearing exactly what the people heard and experienced when it was new, whether it was 1890, 1910, or 1930.  Housing the collection, the Sanfilippo "Place de La Musique" recreates the Victorian era of the first movie palaces, with architectural details and coordinating, antique amenities, as well as serving the acoustical purpose of hearing some of the larger machines such as a fairground organ or a theater pipe organ, in an appropriate setting. The Music Theater can seat 350 and houses the largest theatre pipe organ ever built. The jewel of The Sanfilippo Collection is the Eden Palais, built in 1890, the most complete example of a European Salon Carousel in existence. The overall experience is an auditory and visual immersion in one or the most exciting eras. Following the tour, a plated lunch will be served at Chessie’s Restaurant.

In the small town of Princeton, there is much drama.  Join us at the Festival 56 Theatre, for a tribute to the English faces of the 1930s and 1940s. The Fox on the Fairway takes the audience on a hilarious romp which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy residents of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors and over –the-top romantic shenanigans, it’s an outstanding comedy that recalls some of the Marx Brothers’ classics.  This is a charming adventure from Ken Ludwig, author of Lend Me A Tenor, about love, life and man’s eternal love affair….with golf!
